About Elbert County, Colorado Carved out of Douglas and Greenwood Counties (the remainder of Greenwood County was dissolved into Bent County), in 1889 Elbert county experienced a change. By an act of the State Legislature, Cheyenne, Kit Carson and Lincoln Counties were shaped out of Elbert County, leaving it the way it is today. Elbert County now consists of 1,854 square miles of hills, rolling plains, creeks and springs, ranches, farms, towns, people and history, history and more history. Elbert County lies at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountains and ranges in elevation from 7,350 to 5,000 feet and stretches for 50 miles east and west. From the early trails and stage lines to the decline and abandonment of the Railroads. . . . from the justice of vigilante lynchings to a Sheriff that served and protected the County for over 50 years . . . from times of prosperous farm lands and grazing pastures to the destruction of field and farm by disastrous flood, dust and snowstorms . . . from numerous settlements to only 6 surviving towns, Elbert County has a rich history. Welcome to Elbert County! |
